It happens to me every year, bow season starts in the still humid month of September in Missouri. I , like so many hunter head out opening day…..and sweat.
My desire to hunt keeps me in the wood when my logic tells me to go home because the big bucks won’t be out during the day. I hadn’t had any success for the first month of the season. In Missouri we were in the middle of a long dry spell, and on the last Sunday in October I headed out to a water hole I had dug out a few years ago. When it’s warm and dry, it’s usually the only water around.
I knew it would be a good day when a spike buck came to the water while I was still pulling my bow up to the stand. A few minutes later a button buck came in and 20 minutes after that a large doe came to the water. I was needing some food in the freezer and the doe looked perfect to shoot. As soon as I raised my bow I heard another deer come in that was following the path the doe took and out stepped a nice buck. My attention quickly switched from the doe to the buck. I let the arrow fly and I knew the buck was hit good. He ended up only going 60 yards after the shot. I was pumped to say the least and after getting down and looking at him I realized he had a very unique 3-point brow tine. It was great to harvest such a trophy animal and fill the freezer full of meat!
